When Jurgen Klopp took over at Liverpool in October 2015, many expected almost an immediate change in the club’s fortunes. However, while the German has impressed at times across his tenure on Merseyside, the Reds are clearly in a transitional phase under his watch and further work is required on the transfer front to help them achieve their goals.
Clearly, there will need to be a raft of top-level incomings, though perhaps this summer presents a natural time for a few players to leave Anfield. With Visit Britain running a competition to find the biggest Super Fan to bring over to England, which Liverpool players could make the opposite move?
The MLS is improving with every passing season and the notion of seeing players make a move across the pond is no longer looked upon lightly, with it now providing a competitive league to go and play in, while seeing life somewhat differently.
Here are five Liverpool players who could make that very move…
Lucas
A Liverpool stalwart, Lucas is still making appearances in the first-team, though it’s not clear for how long. A popular figure amongst the Kop, the 30-year-old may find playing time even more difficult to come by next season, opening up the possibility.
Having seen former teammate Steven Gerrard hop across the pond, the Selecao star may be tempted to follow suit.
4. Ragnar Klavan
Another to have impressed at times this term, summer signing Ragnar Klavan will surely find it hard to command first-team minutes as regularly as he has even this season, with Klopp likely to spend big on reshaping his backline.
With that in mind, Klavan could seek a move abroad, with clubs in the MLS able to compete financially these days.
3. James Milner
It may seem silly to suggest, considering his importance to the Reds’ cause this season, though he surely isn’t a long-term option in the left-back role for Liverpool. Should a more natural full-back be brought in over the course of the summer, the former Manchester City and Newcastle man may not feature in midfield either.
Should that happen, perhaps the MLS could prove rather enticing indeed, as it has done for the likes of Gerrard and Frank Lampard before.
2. Lazar Markovic
Despite doing enough to see Liverpool splash out £20m for him only a few summers ago, Lazar Markovic has struggled to find a permanent home in Europe. Spells with Sporting Lisbon and Hull City on loan haven’t really worked out and the likes of Sebastian Giovinco have shown attacking stars can continue thriving long after leaving this continent.
1. Daniel Sturridge
The biggest name on this list, though England international Daniel Sturridge may find a new lease of life over in America. Injury problems have plagued him for the past few years though, even when fit, the 27-year-old has struggled to fit into Klopp’s system.
Would be the biggest name to make the move in years, considering he still has his prime years ahead of him and he’d undoubtedly improve the global appeal.
