Arsenal are plotting a move for Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi, according to reports from The Express.
The 23-year-old was major part of Spain’s European U-21 Championship winning side, providing a calming influence in the centre of the pitch.
His performances in Israel are believed to have been enough to convince Gunners chief Arsene Wenger to push ahead with a deal, as he looks to add to his midfield ranks ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
The Frenchman has been linked with Everton’s Marouane Fellaini, but the Toffees star’s £23m buyout clause is said to be an issue.
He is hopeful that Illarramendi could be a more cost effective option, and a player that could develop into a world-class talent at the Emirates Stadium.
The youngster has a reported £25.7m release clause in his contract, but Real Sociedad may be willing to accept a fee below that figure.
Real Madrid are also said to be interested, with the Bernabeu side seeing Illarramendi as the long-term successor to ex-Liverpool man Xabi Alonso.
Arsenal are believed to have a budget of £70m this summer, with the Londoners’ hierarchy hopeful that financial clout will secure a smoother passage to Champions League qualification after a nervy last game of the season this time around.
Arsenal fans, could Asier Illarramendi be the future of your midfield?
